Obesity: Disease of the ERA

W.H.O (World Health Organization) considered obesity as a chronic disease and recently as an epidemic disease.

Who is Obese?

Individuals with relative weight of 120%of desirable body weight are considered overweight.

Individuals with relative weight 140%of desirable body weight are considered Obese.

Health Consequences of Obesity

Obesity increases the risk of:

  1. Hypertension
  2. Diabetes
  3. Decreases high density lipoprotein, and thus increase the risk of heart diseases
  4. Increase Triglyceride level
  5. Increase Cancer Incidents
  6. Increase Gall bladder

Causes

Obesity is due to an imbalance between Energy intake and Energy expenditure . the following are factors causing obesity:

1.      Genetic causes: Heredity

2.      Primary Overeating

3.      Decreased Physical activity

4.      Certain medications

5.      Defective or decreased Thermogenesis

Treatment

Medical Treatment

  1. Diet and Exercise: healthy diet is that works on reducing calorie intake but allowing healthy and variety of food groups
  2. Medication : Assessment should be done by Endocrinologist , then medication is prescribed , like anorectic drug or thyroid hormone to increase energy expenditure

Surgical Treatment

  1. Gastric Surgery: Gastric banding and stapling
  2. Jaw Wiring
  3. Gastric bypass
  4. Intestinal by pass
